In Memoriam - Sister William Marie Urell, O.P.

Sr. William Marie Urell, O.P., formerly Mary G. Urell, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 80 years died on July 5, 2018 in St. Martin De Porres Community at the Motherhouse. Sr. William Marie was 98 years of age.


Sister William Marie Urell

Sr. William Marie was born to Joseph and Mary McKenna Urell in the Bronx, New York on December 29, 1919. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on February 2, 1939 from St. Pius V. Parish in the Bronx. She received the Dominican Habit on August 25, 1939, professed first vows on August 26, 1940, and final vows on September 7, 1943.

Sister held a BS and an MS in education from Fordham University in the Bronx.

Sister’s many years in ministry were devoted to the education of youth. Sister taught in the following schools in the Bronx: St. Nicholas of Tolentine (1941-1946), St. Benedict School (1946-1947), St. Luke School (1949-1956), St. Anselm School (1956-1966), Our Lady of Victory School (1966-1969), Holy Spirit School (1969-1970), St. Pius V School (1970-1973), and St. Pius High School (1973-1979.) She then taught at St. John School in Goshen, N.Y. (1979-1987) followed by ministry in the Orange County Infirmary as Chaplain, and in St. John Parish in parish ministry (1987-1989.) Sister William Marie also served at St. Dominic’s Home (1947-1949) in the children’s and Sisters’ dining rooms. Lastly, Sr. William Marie was in volunteer services in Blauvelt (1989-2013.) Sister retired to St. Martin de Porres Community in 2013, and until her death engaged in prayer ministry. ​ In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. William Marie is survived by her cousins Randy Darling, Patricia McKenna, Cathy Ward, Jane Mc Gurty, and her nephew, Rev. Msgr. John Urell.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m.

Burial: St. Dominic’s Cemetery immediately following Mass

Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, New York ​ In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, N.Y.
