In Memoriam - Sister Regina Mahoney, O.P.

SR. REGINA MAHONEY, O.P., formerly Joan Mahoney, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for 70 years, died on March 5, 2019 at the Motherhouse in the St. Martin De Porres Community. Sr. Regina was 90 years of age.

Sr. Regina was born to Michael Mahoney and Nellie Healy Mahoney on November 13, 1928, in the Bronx, New York. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, on January 6, 1949 from St. Benedict’s Parish, Bronx, N.Y. She received the Dominican habit on September 8, 1949, professed first vows on September 9, 1950, and final vows on September 9, 1953.


Sister held the B.A. and M.A. in Education from Fordham University.


Sister’s many years of active ministry were devoted to the care and education of youth. She ministered at St. Dominic’s Home, Blauvelt, N.Y., 1951-1969 as group mother. Her teaching ministries included the following schools in the Bronx: St. Mary Star of the Sea, 1969-1971; Holy Spirit, 1971-1974, and St. Benedict’s, 1974-2010. Sister Regina dedicated herself to prayer ministry at Marian Woods in Hartsdale, 2010 -2013 and then returned to the Motherhouse to continue this ministry.


In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Regina is survived by her sister,

Sr. Theresa Mahoney, OSCO, of Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey, Wrentham, Massachusetts, and several nieces and nephews. Sister was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Nellie; her sisters Mary Menichino, Eileen Newell, Florence Crespo; and her brother, Eugene Mahoney.

Wake: Monday March 11, 2019 from 3:00- 7:00 PM


Evening Prayer: Monday, March 11, 2019 at 6:00 PM


Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at 10:30 AM


Burial: St. Dominic Cemetery immediately following Mass


Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, N.Y.


In lieu of flowers contributions, may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, N.Y.
