Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt to Participate in a Catholic Day of Action with Dreamers
February 26, 2018, Blauvelt, New York – Blauvelt Dominican Sisters Arlene Flaherty, O.P., Mary Ann Collins, O.P., and Associate Ellen Nash will participate in a Catholic Day of Action with Dreamers on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, February 27, 2018.
Inspired by their faith tradition, which calls on them to “offer compassion and solidarity with vulnerable people as we work together for justice,” Sisters Arlene Flaherty, O.P., and Mary Ann Collins, O.P., will join with several hundred Catholic sisters, clergy and lay leaders in prayer and an act of solidarity in order to bring attention to the plight of Dreamers. Those participating in this Catholic Day of Action hope to urge Congress to enact a common sense and just legislative solution for Dreamers since March 5, 2018, marks the deadline for the termination of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and as of today, there is no legislation in sight.
“Although they were brought to our country by parents through no fault of their own, Dreamers know the United States as their only home. Failure to act on legislation to protect them from deportation is unconscionable and cruel,” commented Sister Mary Ann Collins, O.P.
Sister Arlene Flaherty, O.P., added, “These young people who are contributors to our economy, veterans of our military, academic standouts in our universities, and leaders in parishes, are ready to contribute to the future of the only country they know, the United States. We must give them this opportunity. Congress must break their deadlock and act.”
