In Memoriam - Sr. Margaret Ann Martin, OP

SISTER MARGARET ANN MARTIN, (Sister Peggy), a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 58-years, died on May 2, 2022 at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence in New City, N.Y. She was 79 years of age.

Sister Peggy was born to Vincent and Margaret McGuire Martin in the Bronx, NY and entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 8, 1963 from St. Simon Stock Parish, Bronx, N.Y. She received the Dominican Habit on June 16, 1964, professed her first vows on June 17, 1965 and final vows on June 13, 1971.


Sister held the BA in History from Dominican College, Orangeburg, N.Y., the MS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y., and MS in Counseling from Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y.


Sister Peggy’s many years in ministry were dedicated to the care and education of youth and young adults, initially as cottage mother at St. Dominic’s Home and later as teacher at St. Dominic’s School, both in Blauvelt. She ministered in Jamaica, West Indies as a teacher at Sacred Heart Academy, Christiana and St. Theresa School, Kingston. Sister served as a Guidance Counselor at St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School, Bronx, N.Y., Assistant to the Associate Director/Guidance, Iona Pastoral Counseling Center, New Rochelle, N.Y. and as an Alcoholism Counselor at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center, Bronx, N.Y. Sr. Peggy ministered as a teacher at Aquinas HS, Bronx, N.Y., Our Lady of Victory Academy, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., and Sacred Heart HS, Yonkers, N.Y. She was Assistant to the Treasurer at St. Dominic’s Convent, Blauvelt, and served at Dominican College’s Freshmen Year Office, and as a Chaplain at Cabrini Nursing Home, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.


In addition to her religious congregation, Sister Peggy is survived by her sisters, Mary Fitzgerald (John) and Ellen Ahmed and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Margaret Martin.


A Private Mass will be held at St. Dominic’s Convent.


Burial will take place in St. Dominic’s Convent Cemetery.


Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, New York.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York.
