SISTER CHRISTINE GREENE, OP (formerly Sr. M. Thomas), a member of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 67 years died on February 16, 2020 in St. Martin de Porres Community at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt. Sister Christine was 85 years of age.
Sr. Christine was born to Colman Greene and Margaret Greene on December 25, 1934, in the Bronx, New York. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on July 16, 1952, from the parish of St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, New York. Sr. Christine received the Dominican habit on January 27, 1953, professed her first vows on January 28, 1954, and her perpetual vows on April 24, 1957.
Sr. Christine held the B.S. in Education from Dominican College, Orangeburg, New York, and the M.S. in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, New York. In addition, Sister held a Certificate in Administration and Supervision. Sister devoted many years of active ministry to the education of youth as a teacher and principal.
Sister taught in Holy Spirit School (1955-1967), and Christ the King (1967-1969), in the Bronx, N.Y. Sister also taught in St. Columba’s School, Hopewell Junction, N.Y. (1969-1970); St. Catharine’s, Blauvelt, N.Y. (1976-1977); and St. Raymond’s School, Providence, Rhode Island (1977-1978). Sister served as Principal of St. Paul’s School, Daytona Beach, Florida (1970-1976), and St. Columba’s School, Hopewell Junction, N.Y. (1978-1985). Sister ministered to the homebound and infirmed at St. Columba’s Parish, Hopewell Junction (1985-1989), and to the Senior Citizens of St. Martin de Porres Parish, Poughkeepsie, New York (1989-1990), as well as, the Senior Citizens of Dutchess County (1993-1995). Sister Christine was a Pastoral Minister at Sacred Heart Parish, Suffern, New York (1995-2007). She retired to Marian Woods, Hartsdale, N.Y. in 2007 where she was active in prayer ministry until 2019 when she returned to the Motherhouse in Blauvelt.
In addition to her Religious Congregation, Sister is survived by a brother, Thomas Greene of Columbus Ohio, a sister, Mary Berry of Laurel, New York, one niece, Christine and three nephews, Paul, Kevin, and William. Sister Christine was predeceased by her parents Colman and Margaret Greene.
