In Memoriam - Sister Victoria Sloane, OP

Sister Victoria Sloane, O.P., a devoted member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for 79 years, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, at the age of 98. Born Elizabeth Sloane on April 4, 1927, in the Bronx, NY, she was the beloved daughter of Michael and Mary (Cassidy) Sloane. Sister Victoria entered religious life on September 12, 1946, from St. Margaret Parish in Middle Village, NY. She professed her final vows on September 5, 1951, committing her life fully to God and service through the Dominican mission.

Affectionately known as “Sr. Vickie,” she dedicated decades of her life to nurturing, teaching, and guiding children. Her ministry was marked by deep compassion, joy, and an unshakable belief in the dignity and potential of every child in her care.

She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Dominican University in 1967, a testament to her commitment to growth and learning throughout her vocation.

Her early ministry included work as a group mother at Astor Memorial (1949–1952), St. Dominic’s Home (1952–1953, 1958–1963, 1973–1974), and the Lavelle School for the Blind (1953–1958). In 1974, Sr. Victoria embraced a new challenge: opening a group home on Gillis Avenue in West Nyack. There, she created a nurturing home environment for “her boys,” including graduates who needed ongoing support. This home became a place of joy, learning, and love—a family in every sense. Big hugs, warm meals, and the words “It’s good to be home” became daily rituals that reflected the heart of her ministry.

From 1980 to 1994, she brought her deep care and educational talents to the classroom as a fourth-grade teacher at St. Lucy School and later coordinated their CRE Program from 1994 to 1999. Her later years were spent at St. Martin de Porres Infirmary, where she served as Director of Household, Personal Assistant to the Sisters, Pastoral Ministry, and Volunteer Services. She remained active in ministry well into her 90s, always offering a smile, a prayer, or a helping hand.

Sr. Vickie was known for her radiant joy, contagious laughter, and boundless love. Her ability to make every child feel safe and cherished was one of her greatest gifts. To all who lived in her cottages and homes, she was more than a caretaker—she was a mother, a mentor, and a steadfast presence in their lives. Sister Victoria’s life was a testament to love in action—faithful, steadfast, and joyful. Her legacy lives on in every heart she touched.

In addition to her religious family, Sr. Vickie was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary Sloane; her sisters Helen Pfeifer, Kathleen Gartland, and Mary O’Connor; her brothers James, Michael, and John Sloane; and her niece Bernadette Pfeifer. She is survived by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
