In Memoriam - Sister Monica Masterson, OP



Sister Monica Masterson, formerly Sister Miriam David, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 63 years, died Saturday, November 19, 2016. Sister was 82 years of age.

​Sr Monica was born to Joseph Masterson and Lillian Triffitt Masterson on September 26, 1934 in Providence, Rhode Island. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on July 16, 1952 from St. Raymond’s Parish, Providence RI.  Sr. Monica received the Dominican habit on January 24, 1953, professed first vows on January 28, 1954, and final vows on April 1, 1959.


Sister held a BS in Education from Dominican College, Blauvelt, NY, and a Master’s Degree in Education/Guidance from St. John’s University, NY and a Master’s Degree in Psychology from Teachers’ College, Columbia University, NY.

Sr. Monica’s many years of active ministry were in the field of education. Sister’s ministries included the following schools: 1955-57 teacher at St. Benedict, Bronx, NY; 1957-64 teacher at St. Anselm, Bronx, 1964-69; teacher  at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Bronx; 1969-72;  psychologist St. Dominic, Blauvelt, NY; 1972-75 consultant, learning specialist, psychologist at Abbot House Ardsley, NY; 1977-78 psychologist at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Yonkers  and St. Joseph, Bronxville schools; 1982-83 teacher at Christ the King, Yonkers; 1983-88; teacher at Sacred Heart School, Dobbs Ferry; 1998-2009 teacher at St. Mary, Yonkers; 2009-2010  CCD  Instructor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ardsley, NY.

Sister retired from active ministry in 2013.

In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Monica is survived by her sisters, Joan Fontaine and Brenda O’Neil, many nieces, nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews.

Relatives and friends may attend services at:

St. Dominic’s Convent 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, New York WAKE: Saturday, November 26 from 11am-1pm MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL:  November 26 at 1pm, Chapel of the Most Holy Rosary. BURIAL: immediately following in St. Dominic’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, NY. Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, New York.
