In Memoriam - Sister Maureen Gibbons, OP



SISTER MAUREEN GIBBONS, O.P., formerly Sr. John Therese, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 63 years died on August 10, 2023 in St. Martin de Porres Community at the Motherhouse in Blauvelt, New York. Sister Maureen was 81 years of age.


Sister Maureen was born to John and Beatrice McCormack Gibbons on May 1, 1942 in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 8, 1960 from St. Pius Parish, Bronx, New York. Sister’s reception into the Congregation was on June 15, 1961. She professed her first vows on June 17, 1962 and her final vows on June 30, 1968.


Sister Maureen held a BS in Elementary Education from Dominican University, Orangeburg, New York and a MS in Elementary Education from City University of New York.


Sister’s many years in ministry were devoted to education, parish ministry, and community service. She taught elementary school for seventeen years (1965-1982): St. Mary Star of the Sea School, City Island, NY, Transfiguration School, West Collingswood, NJ, Holy Spirit School, Bronx, NY and Annunciation School, Manhattan, NY. Sister Maureen then served as Director of St. Anthony’s Soup Kitchen, Manhattan, N.Y. (1982-1986), and Administrative Assistant and Parish Manager at St. Malachy Parish, Manhattan, NY (1987-2002). Sister Maureen was Secretary and Bookkeeper at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Bronx, N.Y. (2002-2009) and currently was ministering as Business Manager of Siena House, a homeless shelter for women and children, in Bronx, NY.


In addition to her religious congregation, Sister Maureen is survived by her brother-in-law Daniel Curtin, niece Catherine Biesty and her cousins Bridget Diviney, and Ann Marie Sesley. Sister was predeceased by her parents John and Beatrice Gibbons and her sister Joan Curtin.

WAKE: Wednesday, August 16, 2023 from 4pm-7pm

EVENING PRAYER: 6pm

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL: Thursday, August 17 at 10:30am

BURIAL WILL TAKE PLACE IN ST. DOMINIC’S CONVENT CEMETRY



Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Service, Nyack, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic, Blauvelt, N.Y.
