In Memoriam - Sr. Judith Campbell, OP

SISTER JUDITH CAMPBELL, O.P., formerly Marguerite Campbell, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York for the past 71 years, died on August 25, 2020 in St. Martin De Porres Community at the Motherhouse. Sister Judith was 89 years of age.

Sister Judith was born to William and Margaret Grant in the Bronx, New York and entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 11, 1949 from St. Luke’s Parish there. She received the Dominican Habit on August 24, 1950, professed first vows on August 25, 1951, and final vows on August 25, 1954.


Sister held the BS in Education, the MS in Religious Studies and a Certificate in Administration from Fordham University. She also held a Certificate in Library and Information Science from Long Island University.


Sister Judith’s many years in ministry included teaching at St. Benedict School, Bronx, N.Y. (1952-1958); Holy Cross School, Manhattan (1958-1961); St. Luke School Bronx, N.Y. (1961-1966).; Saints Philip and James School, Bronx, N.Y. (1966-1970); and serving as Principal of Holy Cross School, Manhattan (1970-1986). Sister served on the staff of Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y. (1986-2012). She ministered there part time while serving as Congregational Archivist (1988-2010.) She provided Community Service at the Motherhouse (2012-2013) and then engaged in prayer ministry as a member of St. Martin De Porres Community until her death.


In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Judith is survived by her sister-in-law Margaret Campbell, her nieces Theresa Brogan, Mary Campbell, and Geralyn Carter, and her nephews Gerard, Steven and Michael. Sister was predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret Campbell, and her brother, Michael.


Arrangements have been made by Hannemann Funeral Home, Nyack, New York.
