The Feast of All Souls
First Reading: Wisdom 3:1-9
Psalm 23:1-6
Second Reading: Romans 5:5-11
Gospel: John 6:37-40

Many, many years ago, a second-grade boy asked me, “If God could do everything, is there anything God could not do?”
Taking a moment for a quick prayer to the Holy Spirit, I answered, “Actually, there is one thing God cannot do–God cannot stop loving us, no matter what.”
I was reminded of this while reading the scriptures for November 2, which tell us that we are always in God's hands, no matter what. Having been tried by God, our hope is for immortality–for eternal union with God–and God graces us to help us achieve this goal. Psalm 23 reminds us that God shepherds us and is with us from beginning to end. We are loved.
Paul tells the Romans, and us, that even though we were sinful, Christ died for us and reconciled us to God. God's charity–God's love–has been poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. We are loved.
The beloved John shares what he learned at the feet of Christ: Christ came down from Heaven to do God's will–to save us from ourselves, to bring us home, to enjoy eternity with the One who loves us more than we can ever imagine. We are most definitely loved.
God, we thank you for the gifts of life, faith, community, family, and friends. Someday, we will say to You: You are loved.
