Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16 - Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 - Matthew 10:37-42

“Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord” - Ps. 89
As I reflected on the scripture readings for this Sunday, the theme of joy seemed to surface as a thread throughout.
In the first reading, Elisha the prophet rewards the woman who showed kindness to him with the promise of a son she would soon bear. What joyful news!
In the reading from Paul to the Romans, the people are reminded that, just as Jesus was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, through baptism they too might live in newness of life, living for God in Christ Jesus. Death no longer had power over Him! And so, they should think of themselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus. What joy would have filled their hearts!
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus teaches the conditions of discipleship. He reassures the Apostles that, as they have given up their lives to follow Him, they will be rewarded with salvation, and that whoever receives them, receives Him, and the One who sent Him.
The gift of salvation, won through Jesus Christ and bestowed through grace, brings the reward of eternal life. What joy should fill our hearts, knowing that we have been called to witness to the love and faithfulness of our loving God.
As we contemplate the goodness of God that has been showered upon us throughout our lives, let us share the joy that His Word and His Presence have brought into our own lives, even as we have faced uncertainties and struggles along the way. As disciples of Jesus, let us continue to strive to be instruments of peace, bringing God’s Presence to all those we encounter each day, with a joyful spirit.
