2019 MLK Day of Service Opportunities

By Katie Beckmann, Communications Manager

MLK Day is looked at as a day off from school or work for some, a day to pay tributes to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for others, and a day of opportunity for all.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Since 1994, MLK Day has been recognized as a national day of service. (1) Each year, Americans throughout the country have engaged in service projects in their local communities.

In Rockland County, there are many MLK Day of Service opportunities that take place each year. This year, Dominican College is hosting Volunteer New York and local nonprofit organizations to provide MLK Day of Service opportunities for those who are interested in volunteering. Listed below are the organizations participating in the event, as well as the service opportunities.

1. Nyack Center – Birthdays in a Bag for Children in Need

2. Hope Community Services – Laundry Sachet Kits

3. SPCA of Westchester – Dog pull toys for sheltered pups

4. Worldwide Community First Responder, Inc. – Be a Life-Saver: Learn Hands-only CPR

5. VA Hudson Valley Health Care System – We Love our Seniors – Door Hangers

6. United for the Troops – Gratitude Jars

7. WestCOP – Westchester Community Opportunity Program – Math Clip Kits – Makes Math Visually Fun

We hope that in 2019, you will consider making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a “day on, not a day off.” (2) To learn more about these service opportunities and sign up to volunteer, click here.
