Sister Mary Eileen O'Rourke, OP formerly SR. Bertille, a member of the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, for the past 63 years died July 14, 2016. Sr. Mary Eileen was 81 years old.
Sister Mary Eileen was born to Geraldine Prendergast and Timothy O'Rourke on March 25, 1935 in the Bronx, New York. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 10, 1953 from St. Margaret of Cortona Parish, Riverdale, NY. Sister received the Dominican Habit on July 5, 1954, professed her first vows July 6, 1955 and her final vows on July 6, 1958.
Sister held the BS in Education from Dominican College, NY. Sister's many years of active ministry were divided between teaching and supervision in St. Dominic's Home. She taught in the following schools: St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Bronx, NY 1957-1966; Our Lady of the Rosary, Yonkers, NY 1966-1969; Our Lady of the Assumption, Bronx, NY 1969-1970. Sister Mary Eileen worked in various capacities at Saint Dominic's Home from 1970-1995.
She was intake and referral coordinator at Good Counsel Inc. as well as Director of the Community's Associate Program 1995-1999. Sister was a Vista Volunteer at Highbridge Community Life Center, Bronx, NY 1999-2002 and Manager of the Community Gift Shop 2002-2008.
Due to illness, Sister retired from active ministry in 2009.
In addition to her religious congregation, Sr. Mary Eileen is survived by her brothers Thomas O'Rourke in California, Timothy in White Plains, NY, her sister Eileen Sottung , in Florida as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
