Last week, the Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration (OPSCC) announced the formation of a new Fratelli Tutti study group, open to sisters, associates, and friends of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York.
The Fratelli Tutti study group will allow participants to virtually gather, read, and pray together throughout November, with the hope of building an understanding and commitment to relationships of respect, dignity, care, and justice.
Fratelli Tutti, as explained on the Vatican website, is devoted to "fraternity and social friendship. Pope Francis felt himself, a brother to the sun, the sea, and the wind, yet he knew that was even closer to those of his flesh. Wherever he went, he sowed seeds of peace and walked alongside the poor, the abandoned, the infirm, and the outcast, the least of his brother and sisters." (1)
Sr. Didi Madden, OP, OPSCC Promoter of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation shared, "Fratelli Tutti is a timely correction to our overly self-focused, materialistic, and competitive world. It re-asserts the dignity of each person by calling for justice, equity, compassion, and opportunities for the realization of human potential. What is does not do is engage what that means for the institutional church and our society."
Pope Francis' Fratelli Tutti encyclical challenges readers to widen their capacity for inclusion, as well as deepen their commitment to systemic transformation and understand Catholic social teaching on a much deeper basis.
"This will be the task of the study group, to explore what it means to be a church, religious institution, and society in light of the powerful vision and to embrace the change, re-orientation, and sacrifice to which it calls us," explained Sr. Didi.
