He Is Risen!
As I write this reflection on a beautiful spring day, I notice the blue sky, slight breeze, and the warmth of the sun. It has been five days since our last snow storm and to look around; you’d never know it. What a difference five days can make for us today and for those who lived before us.
Five days before the Resurrection, tension started to build around Jesus and those who followed. As the tension came to a head, no one knew what the result would be. I can’t imagine having been there and experiencing the intense feelings that each person felt. The journey from Wednesday to Sunday changed our lives forever, as darkness was transformed into light and life became eternal.
In Luke’s Gospel (24:13-35), the accounting of Jesus’ Resurrection includes the Road to Emmaus; the story of two disciples walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus who encounter a man who joins them on their journey. They cannot recognize this man to be Jesus, as “their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.” The Resurrection was explained through their telling of the story to this man. The culmination of their journey together ends in a meal where Jesus reveals Himself to them through the breaking of bread.
This is a powerful story that I have always identified with, as I am slow to see, slow to believe, slow to trust the burnings within.
I don’t want to miss the resurrections in my own life. God’s spirit is within and around me, as it is within and around you. Let us pray for each other on this glorious day of life and hope that we may never lose sight of these truths.
