Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 18, 2010

Genesis 18:1-10 Colossians 1:24-28 Luke 10:38-42

Hospitality was a treasured trait among the Hebrews and is vividly exemplified in today's first reading. There Abraham receives three strangers, treats them as honored guests and gives them his full attention.

In the Gospel Jesus is the recipient of hospitality at the home of his friends Martha and Mary. Both are happy to see their dear friend Jesus. In the spirit of true Hebrew hospitality, they warmly welcome him as their honored guest. He is the focal point of their awareness and attention.

Mary sits at the feet of Jesus, listens attentively to his word and absorbs his love.

As Martha prepares the meal, she, too, is attentive to Jesus. When she transfers her focus from Jesus to Mary, she feels burdened and becomes anxious. She is doing all the work and Mary is doing "nothing".

Martha trusted Jesus and treasured his friendship. She knew she could always tell Jesus exactly how she felt; she could speak openly and honestly to him. No need of pretense in the presence of her good friend.

Therefore, Martha expresses her feelings to Jesus. She feels burdened, put upon and is becoming anxious. She listens to his gentle response and what it implies. " Martha, do not be anxious". Refocus, look at me, feel my love for you and together we will get the work done.

Sometimes, like Martha, you and I focus on "WHAT" needs to be done (family, job, church, relationships /responsibilities).We lose sight of "WHO" is always with us.

When responsibilities distract you from the presence of Jesus, you may become overwhelmed, as did Martha. Anxiety, fear or anger might displace the love, peace and joy Jesus desires to give you.

Imitate Martha, go to Jesus and speak honestly and candidly about how you feel about a relationship, situation or job to be done. Do not be embarrassed if your feelings are negative. Jesus does not condemn feelings; he listens compassionately and will help you refocus.

Imitate Mary and set aside time daily to do "nothing" and just "be" in the presence of your loving God.

Your greatest source of wisdom and strength come when you sit at the feet of Jesus and experience the great love God has for you. Listen to the words of Jesus and let them guide you as you discern the best approach to deal with your challenges.

Impelled by contemplation, your actions may bring love, peace and justice to those places in your family, work, church and world where it may be lacking.

Dear Jesus, help me to be more aware and attentive of your presence in my life. May I imitate the hospitality of Mary and Martha and always welcome you warmly. Amen.
