"If you love me, you will keep my commandments and I will ask God and
God will give you another Advocate to be with you forever." John 14:15-16
The scripture readings for this sixth Sunday of Easter speak of the presence of the Holy Spirit within us and the power and hope this presence brings us.
In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Luke teaches that it is only upon receiving the Holy Spirit that the new Samaritan converts come into the fullness of Christian life. In the second reading Peter tells the early Christians they must be prepared to give a reason for their hope to all who ask, even those who would harm them.
In the gospel Jesus gives the reason for this hope. In preparing His disciples for His departure, Jesus promises that He will not leave them alone. Another Advocate, the Spirit of Truth will be with them to enable them to carry on His mission. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that they will be able to accomplish all that is expected of them in spite of the trials and difficulties they will face.
The power of the Spirit has been given to us as well. In spite of personal pain or loss, in spite of living in a culture that does not share our values, the peace of the Spirit is with us, enabling us to overcome even the most difficult circumstances. This is our reason for hope.
The world today needs hope. It needs to hear the gospel preached. Like the early disciples we are called to carry on the work of Jesus, to bring the presence of the risen Christ to a world in need of good news. There are many who, strengthened by the Spirit, witness to that presence through works of justice. Can you join them in assisting those most in need: the poor, immigrants, victims of unjust war, and victims of human trafficking? Or perhaps you can reach out to someone closer to you, a friend or neighbor who needs to find reason to hope.
To whom will you bring good news this Easter season?
Let Us Pray:
Come Holy Spirit re-kindle in us the fire of your love. Strengthen us by your presence so that our Christian hope may be made visible in our service to others. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen
