SECOND SUDAY OF EASTER
March 30, 2008
Acts of the Apostles 2:42-47; Peter 1: 3-9: John 20: 19-31
"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good, His love is everlasting" Responsorial Psalm
Since Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon, after the first day of Spring, the moon stands as a reminder of the Light of Christ illuminating the darkness of our world. As I looked out over the glow of the full moon on Good Friday evening, I watched as it lit up the night sky over the ocean and spread its warm and sparkling light over the water.
As we continue to be made aware of the darkness of our world - the greed and oppression of the powerful, the words of the first reading stand in direct contradiction - "they had all things in common." Christian Community calls us to a life of selflessness and service to those who stand in need of compassion and mercy.
What Joy should be ours as we contemplate the events of Holy Week, culminating in the Resurrection, and the many appearances of Jesus following Easter Day, bringing Peace to all He encountered on the Way!
Peter, in the second reading, speaks of "a new birth to a Living Hope". We are called to bring this Hope to those who struggle under the burden of poverty, violence, disaster, sickness and trials of every kind. We must be willing to be sent as messengers of God's Peace where we are - believing that we are united in the Mission of the Risen Jesus.
Believing, though we have not seen, we have the assurance that as we walk on our Journey of Life, the Light of Christ leads us through the darkness of this life. With Thomas, we need reminders of the presence of God, especially when the darkness looms near. Let us shine the Light of Christ over our world in the places where we live and minister, so we will be able to see more clearly. .
Prayer:
Let us pray for the courage to bring the message of God's love, mercy and compassion to all those we encounter on the Way. May we be filled with the joy and peace of this Easter Season so that by our witness, the glow of the presence of the Light of Christ might shine through us.
