Caring for the Earth

Recent actions for the Environment include:
Creation of a Blauvelt Dominican Land Ethic based on the belief that the earth is the primary sustainer of life and a sacred living revelation of God. This Land Ethic is meant to influence and direct our individual and corporate actions

Our LAND ETHIC

We, the Sisters of St Dominic of Blauvelt, believe that: our contemplation of Truth and our relationship to the Holy; our Christ-like compassion for the needs of the poor and our share in the mission for justice have opened our eyes to God's most sacred blessing.

We have begun to realize that the earth is the primary sustainer of life and a sacred living revelation of God

We believe:
  • that all creation bears the imprint of God's nature and represents God's goodness
  • that God's creation of the universe is an ongoing process;
  • that the loving care of the Creator balances and sustains all life.
We believe:
  • that we are called to be sustaining and creative participants in the on-going life of the earth and its resources;
  • that the earth is our home and each one of us has the responsibility to preserve it;
  • that the human community and the natural world must greet the future as one single, sacred community.
We believe:
  • that the beauty of the earth sustains and refreshes the human spirit;
  • that as we contemplate the earth in all its glory, we stand in awe and reverence before the wonders of creation.

Actions

These beliefs challenge us:

  • to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community;
  • to be guided by economic, political, religious and ethical principles that promote reverence and justice for the environment;
  • to assure that the decision-making process includes research and planning that focuses as much on the future good of the land and the people, as it does on the present;
  • to evaluate the consequences of all decisions made about our land and its resources in accordance with our mission.

Conclusion
In light of our expressed beliefs, the land owned by the Congregation takes on new meaning for us. The truths set forth in this LAND ETHIC will influence and direct both our individual and corporate actions.
